I have vague memories of my mom going through menopause just as I was entering my teens…oh the sweet memories of doors slamming one moment and the next we were crying side-by-side while watching 90210 and Party of Five Together on Wednesday nights. (I’m pretty sure my brother and dad were conveniently golfing a lot that year…).
The definition of menopause is ‘the permanent end of menstruation and fertility defined as occurring 12 months after your last period.’ So what my mom was going through was what would be considered perimenopause or pre-menopause. Perimenopause takes 6-10 years for the transition into menopause, starting at age 35! (I had no idea either). Perimenopause is the mirror image of puberty; a hormonal shift. My mom and I bonded over our hormonal swings: mine ramping up and hers taking a swan dive into menopause. If you are like, me, coming off of postpartum hormonal...
I remember sitting with my doctor when she said, (very nonchalantly I may add), “yeah, it’s probably perimenopause.” What?! No, I’m too young, I am sure that getting my period every 2 weeks, breast tenderness and never-ending PMS means I am dying, I mean…. I’m not even 40 yet!
Though, when I actually thought about it, I had been getting messages (alarm bells) from my body for a few years prior to that appointment. I had just been ignoring them because I assumed they were “normal”...I was “just stressed” and this is what #momlife was all about.
I was living on caffeine, skipping lunches, and supplementing with protein bars and shakes. My stress level was at an all-time high. I had insufferable mood swings and I was so. damn. tired. When I would finally fall into bed exhausted, I would just toss and turn, even after a glass of wine (or three)...and then wake up drenched in sweat every night.
